Combat

Combat during the Hundred Years’ War was a defining force that shaped the lives of all classes, from kings and nobles to common foot soldiers and civilians. For knights, battle was not only a way to defend their lands and claim honor but also a means of social and political advancement. Warfare was intertwined with the medieval economy and culture, as soldiers often became mercenaries, and ransoms from captured enemies could shift the balance of power. Entire communities were drawn into the conflict, and the threat of raids, sieges, and territorial disputes was a constant presence.

The battlefield was where advancements in weaponry and tactics were tested. New technology was constantly being introduced to the battlefield, new weapons were trialled and new techniques of armour making would be put to the test. These new developments led to changes in how wars were fought. Each battle reflected not just military skill but the shifting political and social landscape of the time, leaving an indelible mark on medieval Europe.

At the College of Chivalry, we dedicate ourselves to understanding and recreating these historical battles with the highest level of accuracy. Through extensive research into period manuscripts, archaeological findings, and historical records, we’ve pieced together how combat techniques were developed and refined. We work with historians, weapon experts, and scholars to ensure that our re-enactments reflect the realities of medieval warfare. Our demonstrations aren’t just performances—they’re educational experiences grounded in deep historical knowledge, giving modern audiences a true sense of what life on the battlefield was like for those who lived through this era of conflict.
